The nightlife guide I wish I had on my first day in Southeast Asia.
I didn't start Lazy Nomad because I wanted to become a "nightlife creator." I started it because I used to be exactly where you might be now.
A Western guy, deep into routine, coming out of a relationship that left me burned out — not broken, just aware that something wasn't working anymore. Life was comfortable, predictable… and uninspiring. I kept asking myself whether there was more out there than the same conversations, the same cities, the same weekends on repeat.
So I made a decision. I bought a one-way ticket to Southeast Asia, packed light, and chose to learn by doing. I didn't escape my life — I stepped into a different one. I rebuilt perspective while navigating nightlife across Thailand, Vietnam, the Philippines, and Cambodia — not as a fantasy, but as real streets, real people, and real situations.
I arrived with absolutely no map.
No nightlife guide.
No travel safety intel.
No cultural understanding.
No community.
Just instinct, curiosity, and a willingness to walk into the unknown. And courage, maybe too much of it…
And because of that, I made plenty of mistakes early on:
None of this showed up on YouTube.
None of it appeared on blogs.
None of it made it into "Top 10 Nightlife Guides to Thailand."
That's because the internet usually shows a polished, sponsored, safe-for-advertisers version of Southeast Asia nightlife.
But the real nightlife world — the one travelers actually step into — is very different:
It's unfiltered. It's unpredictable. It can be exciting and rewarding. And without context, experience, or guidance, it can turn risky faster than most people expect.
Yet beneath the scams, noise, and misunderstandings, I started to notice something important:
Nightlife wasn't random at all
It was shaped by unspoken rules, local context, and human dynamics — and it rewarded awareness while punishing ignorance
Once I understood that, the pattern became clear
To provide the kind of nightlife guidance I didn't have when I first arrived in Southeast Asia
